Since moving the web-hosting has proven to be more than my tech ability will allow, there's really no way for the non-Facebookers to know the details of MiB.

If you live for carving the mountain roads, with your exhaust reverberating off the canyon walls, MiB might be for you. It's basically a "drop in" event based in Boone, North Carolina. Home of some of the best roads the US has to offer. September 24-27, 2015.

Super 8 is offering rates of $55 on weeknights (Sun-Thur) and $79 for weekends (Fri-Sat). Rates do not include tax. Mention Miatas in Boone when making your reservation. Book by calling 828-264-4133 or 800-823-6159.

If you think you might be interested in MiB, read THIS MIATA.NET THREAD (http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=477479)

and watch THIS VIDEO (https://youtu.be/KVT7smChrCA)

And find more information HERE (http://mibforum.com/miatasinboone/)

MiB is normally about 100 people, seriously interested in driving.

Miatas in Boone - Come to Heaven. Drive like hell.

6ULs baby! 10" of course!

6ULs in 10" won't fit the ND. I am looking for a lightweight black 16*8 in a 4*100 so I can add 205 RE71

Jongbloed 15x10s fit ND. ;)

With stock brakes or Wilwood/Brembo?

I just don't like the looks of the 15s at all on the ND, they are just too small for the gap. (I am not speaking of just the vertical, but the horizontal as well).

They are doing 15×8 at Flyin Miata I believe. Much better tire choice in 15!

With their Wilwoods (which won't be out until mid sept at best) a 15" will fit, plus they just don't look right.

What more tire choice do I want than an RE71?

I am also considering 17*8 but still debating.

Both.

I haven't seen a 15 on an ND yet with a proper diameter tire. I agree that so far they look pretty bad, but the tires are not the right size on anything i've seen yet. Needs a 225/50, minimum. I want to see a 15x10 with the 235/50-15 R888.

That said, 15 is a silly compromise these days. There's enough 205 and 225 16s to work, and tons in the 17" realm. :)

Worse tire choice. 225/45 or 205/50 isn't the right diameter in a 15.

Yeah, you need a higher profile tire. 33x10.50's if you can get a street tread.:D

Joke or....?

Putting an NA/NB tire package on the ND results in a 1" reduction in rolling diameter. It's going to look weird. This isn't the Miata we know and love that takes 23" packages. This is better, you have choices outside of 15s.

I think he's saying that 50 profile in a 235 is a lot sidewall on a performance car. That's nearly 5" tall. Have to be pretty stiff to have any responsiveness.

I am not going to half ass it. Either I do it the right way or not at all. It needs the right wheels and tires. Unfortunately, right now the tires exist but the right wheels for me don't. I plan on this being a long term labor of love

The "rolleyes" emoticon should be a giveaway. 33x10.50's are huge on a Jeep, forget the ND.

I'm just saying if you go to 15's on this car, you'd need a lot more sidewall (higher aspect ratio) to make them look halfway decent, but then you'd start losing handling performance. 16's, or even 17's would look better, with a lowered stance.

Gotcha. (33s are going on my Cherokee, though. ;) )

A 50 series in a decent tire isn't really a problem.

That said, i agree. I don't think 15s are going to look great no matter what you do, and the slight weight benefit probably isn't going to outweigh the inferior tire selection. (And looks.) :p

16x7 with a RE-71 205/45/16 would be a great setup for a first step Mike. Once you did more suspension upgrades you could get 17"s to play hard and then use the 16" for A/S tires so you don't have to chew up your good stuff for things like Zoomin'.

I am keeping the 17*7 for the slower and winter stuff. I really like the stock wheels, if they were 8" if would just wrap them with good stuff for the summer

I'm not understanding the question(s), exactly. Subscription and car limits? Not sure what you mean by this. All cars are welcome. Wednesday is just "drop in" stuff, since so many people are already in the area. It happens whether we list it or not.

7thSon

6th August 2015, 20:04

There's always a maximum a single group leader can handle. All it takes to expand a group is for another person to step up and take on the task of leading the overflow. MiB is not really an "event", it is a series of small activities. Most will be "unplanned" until people actually arrive. I personally don't have any planned rides I'm leading. It depends on what I see or want to do when I arrive, and how much time I can devote.

Dragonfighter

6th August 2015, 20:19

And I would assume, the 'Boosted Breakfast Run' will be a bit more "spirited" than the naturally aspirated run will be. The destination is a good one though, however you get there.

KeeperNC

6th August 2015, 20:22

I don't have FB.

As Brad mentioned (in that m.net link from MIB3), the relationships are half the fun, even if MIB is MUCH more driving-focused than many other social-themed Miata events. Facebook is a key way to keep up with other MIBers' Miata exploits - and importantly, impromptu rides - throughout the "offseason."

If you have internet, you have FB - it's free. I know that many people don't want to get into FB for various reasons, and I don't blame 'em at all - frankly, a lot of good reasons to stay away! Still, you might consider creating a FB identity ONLY for MIB. It would be the rough equivalent of being an m.net lurker who never posts - still lots of good info to receive.

At worst, you could delete the FB account at the end of September.

Canyon

6th August 2015, 20:23

The "events during the event" are posted on Facebook, and you can sign up there. It looks like most of the tour group leaders set a maximum or 20 cars or people. The "breakfast runs" look to have a maximum set be the restaurant.

7thSon

6th August 2015, 20:30

Or, just show up and have a good time. That's pretty easy.

The reason I posted the planned Facebook rides on here is someone asked me to in a PM. There's really no reason rides can't also be planned here that don't appear there. Or, they could be on any other Miata website. I know of one club that has a Sunday drive at MiB that's only posted on their site.

I don't have a FB account either, but a few of us are considering another Virginia Creeper Trail ride again this year on Friday. Last year the group was most ably herded by Cortinanut.

I'm guessing a 9 am departure from Highland Hills for an 11 am shuttle ride to the top of Whitetop. We're usually back to Boone by 5ish - depending on your pace down the trail and how much time we devote to driving the Snake on the return trip.

Is anyone interested?

This is a fun event - driving some great roads and spending some time enjoying nature on a scenic bike trail.

Agreed on the fun factor - great ride with some awesome roads, and the time away from the car is a nice change of pace.

I lived in Boone from 1986 to 1992. Boone has changed tremendously since 2002. Blowing Rock is in the midst of a major road construction project on 321. If you enjoy driving your Miata the way Mazda engineers intended, you'll enjoy MiB.

Yesterday I took a trip to Damascus, Virginia to ride the Creeper Trail. The day was perfect - temps in the upper 70's, sunny skies and low humidity.

I made reservations for the 11 am shuttle on Friday September 25. I have 10 slots held, but can change that number up or down depending on interest in this ride. Cost will be approximately $27 or so - perhaps a couple of dollars less depending on the size of the group. This includes bike rental, helmet (optional), bottle of water and shuttle service to Whitetop.

The Virginia Creeper Trails runs 34 miles from Whitetop Station to Abingdon, Virginia. We'll be enjoying the 17 mile section from Whitetop to Damascus. This portion of the trail affords an easy ride - with the first 14 miles or so downhill. The other sections are flat with no uphill pedaling. We'll meet at the Highland Hills and depart there by 9:15. This will give us ample time to make the drive , get parked, registered, bike selected, etc.

The drive to Whitetop is approximately 35 minutes. You are free to set your own pace down the trail. There are numerous places to stop and relax. The Creeper Trail Café is 10 is 10 miles from Whitetop and offers delicious sandwiches, fries and "famous" chocolate cake.

On our drive back to Boone we'll enjoy a leisurely drive (through perhaps the world's shortest tunnel at Backbone Rock) to Shady Valley. We'll make a brief pit stop at the country store before enjoying half of the Snake (US421). Depending on the group size and pace down the trail, I hope to have the group back to Boone in the 5:30 range.

Here are some reviews of the Creeper Trail....

While I won't be doing the Creeper trail ride for the Miatas in Boone event, I heartily recommend it to anyone, I've ridden the entire trail from Whitetop which is at the NC border to Abingdon about 10 years ago. It's an easy ride down to Damascus, lots of scenery along the way.

Gravity Gran Prix. Just test your rental bike's brakes, you'll need them more than the pedals for 80% of the ride. The Creeper trail is a beautiful ride.

When: Fri Sept 25
Where: Caldwell Community College
Time: 8am-4pm (Drivers meeting at 7:45)

facebook link: https://www.facebook.com/events/785083384946478/

If you do not facebook but want to go on this run, PM me here on m.net.

Second annual pass of this run with a few tweaks from what we learned last year.

Distance: 244 miles.
Time: 8 Hours Boone to Boone.
Pace Swift Touring
Leader(s) Rob Bolling & ???

While I have shortened the run about 50 miles, I kept all the parts folks said they liked and dropped most of the tedious stuff. (No run up Hayter's Gap to meet another truck pulling a backhoe across the "ledge of death".)

We will still go to Burkes Garden via the Back of the Dragon and we'll still do a good bit of clamoring down rural valley roads and it wouldn't be the Tankfull Targa without a stop at Backbone but we'll only make one pass at the Snake and the ride back will be much shorter and comprised of slightly more subdued routes.

Plan on a rest stop every two hours at the minimum and of course lunch at the Burke's Garden General store.

Probably need to limit this to 16 cars so we don't overwhelm Maddie at the store for lunch. (she is expecting us this year) If it does hit 12 -16 cars, I would like one volunteer to run in the middle to be a second leader for the latter half of the group in congested areas so we can keep things rolling.

I posted this on the MiB Facebook page, repeating here (and in the Midwest forum) for those who don't FB.

Do any NA/NB owners from the Midwest plan to drive through or near St. Louis on the way to MiB? Specifically I-64 near I-57 - passing by Nashville Illinois (not TN), or through St. Louis itself? If you can pick up a hardtop for me en route, I'll pay your gas money to get to Boone.

Naturally, this needs to be someone without a fixed hardtop - based on your build thread, I think this rules you out, Concealer.

The HT was sold to me by a fellow m.netter, so this isn't some random craigslist seller who I'm hoping will show up - he'll work with me/you to make the logistics easy. If anyone's interested, please PM or email me, and I'll work out all the details.

Thanks!

P.S. I do have a potential backup option in someone going to Solo Nationals from South Carolina - but someone heading to MiB would be simpler if it works out.

Time: 8+ hours
Pace: MiB spirited -1 notch. Plenty of great roads, most of which we don’t frequent. Long day, far afield and early in the week. There will be opportunities to let the ponies run and times to reign it in.

Wed., 6:30a Dawn Patrol Lite
Anything worth doing is worth doing early, right? Well, about 6:30?

Distance: 100-120 miles.
Time: About 4 if traffic slows us, if not, more like 2/12 to 3.
Pace: As close to MiB spirited as I will ever go (but still a bit short of it). Route is filled with serious twisties connected by more relaxed transit stretches between.

Wed., 7:30a Shatley Springs Breakfast Run
For those that like running as the sun comes up. If you're in town early and are up for a hearty, family-style breakfast - come along!

Leaving HH at 7am, arrive for breakfast by 8am, depart by 9:30am and be back in Boone by 10:30am and the next event.

Wed., 10:30a Tire Warmer Sorties (Spirited)
You arrived early, and you want to know what MiB is all about. Or, you already know, and can't wait to get started. Everyone welcome, but follow all the rules. Short runs leaving every couple of hours.

Wed., 11:00a Quick Spins (Semi-Spirited/Quick Touring)
Just what the name implies. These will be multiple opportunities for short semi-spirited runs to the closest twisties and landmarks just to get our feet wet. This is being done in conjunction with the Tire Warmer Sorties.

Distance: 30-40 miles.
Time: About 1 hour each
Pace: Swift but pace adjusted to participant needs.
Max cars: 3-4 per run

This is a quick way for some of the folks new to MiB to see the kinds of roads the area offers and also find out what pace YOU prefer in relation to MiB.
I will make the first of these runs around 11am Wed. Once a run finishes, I will leave for the next one around the next half hour increment. (So if the 11am run returns at 12, I will probably leave for the next at 12:30, if that one returns at 1:30, the next one will go around 2:00 etc.)

Thurs., 7:00a Power Tour (to the MiB Dyno Day at 42 Autosports)
Leaving Highland Hills Motel at 7:00am. Run some good backroads before a stop for breakfast, then some less exiting roads before we arrive at 42 Autosports.
We'll try to have fun route back, too.
Total Round-trip distance = 200 miles

Thurs., 9:00a Quick Spins
See definition above

Thurs., 9:30a MiB Dyno Day at 42 Autosports
Cost will be $50 prepaid via PayPal or cash on site. We need a MINIMUM OF 10 PREPAID MIATAS to make this event happen. Price include three (3) pulls on the Mustang chassis dyno with AFR (very helpful for your tuning needs).

Pay close attention to the listed times, as the "event time" is when participants need to arrive at 42 Autosports. The run from Boone (see separate event) will need to leave much earlier. You do not have to be part of the tour to participate in the Dyno Day, and vise-versa. Just remember, if we don't make the minimum, then the tour won't happen, either.

Send a PM to 7thson for pre-pay instructions.

Maximum 25 cars.

Naturally, in the name of fun, we'll be setting up some betting pools and side-wagering is encouraged! This is meant to be a fun event, so please obey all shop rules, and when your turn comes up, please be ready.
42 Autosports
726 Church St North, Concord, North Carolina 28025

Thurs., 12:00p Caravan from Roanoke to MiB
Food Lion - 4350 Franklin Rd SW, Roanoke, Virginia 24014
A drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway from Roanoke, VA to Boone. We'll depart the Food Lion (4350 Franklin Road SW, Roanoke, VA 24014) at noon and arrive in Boone by 4 PM.

Fri., 8:00a Tank Full Targa
Second annual pass of this run with a few tweaks from what we learned last year.
Distance: 244 miles.
Time: 8 Hours Boone to Boone.
Pace Swift Touring

Probably need to limit this to 16 cars so we don't overwhelm Maddie at the store for lunch. (she is expecting us this year) If it does hit 12 -16 cars, I would like one volunteer to run in the middle to be a second leader for the latter half of the group in congested areas so we can keep things rolling.

Fri., 9:00a Snake and Creeper Trail
SB_92_MX5 has made reservations for the 11 am shuttle on Friday September 25.

Fri., 3:00p Sims BBQ Run
If there's one thing you need to try when visiting the Carolina's, it's the BBQ. We will be doing exactly that on Friday night as we take a spirited backroad tour to end up at Sims, an all-you-can-eat joint serving up the smoked meats and sides (slaw, beans, corn cakes, etc).

There's usually a live band and we'll leave enough time after dinner to allow for some dancing, if that's what you're into. Or just queue back up in line for seconds.

BRING CASH and be prepared to wait in line to get in.

Sat., 7:30a Boosted Breakfast Run (Spirited)
This is for owners hungry for power, and hungry for breakfast!

A new MiB offering!

Open to all turbocharged and supercharged cars attending MiB, as well as any Mazda with engine swap **other than NA/NB with engines available in NA/NB.** (Honda K/J, Ford 2.5, any V6 or V8 swap, rotary into Miata, MZR powered NA/NB, etc.)

**Be ready to go at 7:30 sharp!**

The route and destination will remain undisclosed. Prepare for a total of 50 miles and 3 hours. Also prepare for changes in climate, possibly cooler or warmer.

Sat., 8:00a Naturally Aspirated Breakfast Run (Spirited) Ride Already Full
Boost?! We don't need no stinkin' boost!

A breakfast run for those wanting breakfast, but don't need a swap, turbo or supercharger to get there quickly! CHEATERS with TURBOS and SUPERCHARGERS are NOT ALLOWED

**Be ready to go at 8:00 sharp!**

The route and destination will remain undisclosed. Prepare for a total of 50 miles and 3 hours. Also prepare for changes in climate, possibly cooler or warmer.

Sat., 8:30a Sleepy Heads Breakfast Run
A breakfast run for those wanting breakfast, but didn't get into the early drives.

**Be ready to go at 8:30 sharp!**

The route and destination will remain undisclosed. Prepare for a total of 50 - 75 miles and about 3 hours. Also prepare for changes in climate, possibly cooler or warmer.

Sat., 8:45a Buffalo Brunch Run

Swift-Touring pace on local favorite roads to an 11:00 early lunch stop at a hidden gem. (this wil be the most relaxed run I lead and will include the Parkway for a few miles.)

Distance 110mi.
Allow 4 hours.
Drivers meeting @8:45 on the road @9am.
Max attendees 40 people but I will need extra volunteers to lead for every 8-10 cars that sign up to keep the driving fun and safe.

As for the lunch destination:

http://www.buffalomercantilecompany.com/

It seems a little while back this northerner fellow transplanted himself to a local trading post that had first started business in the late 1800s. The store had closed a few years back but he decided to breathe new life into it and opened up an authentic NY Pizza joint. Now, he will tell you it is actually a "New Haven" pizza joint as the New York folks stole the recipe from folks in Connecticut... But I digress.

Anyway he is looking forward to as many of us as would like (up to 40 or so folks) coming by to try his pizza that Saturday.
He also offers burgers and "sanmmiches" for those not so pizza inclined.

Much like the other Saturday morning runs, if you wish to participate in this drive you MUST sign up in advance. His operation is small and he has asked us to use his menu to order before we leave Boone and he will have the food ready within minutes AFTER our arrival.

(he assured us it won't be cold or food that has been sitting, he just wants to be able to pre-prep the proper number of crusts and ingredients and have enough staff to efficiently handle the number of people we bring all at once.)

The menu is available at the link above and a printable version is here:

http://www.buffalomercantilecompany....Out%20menu.pdf

At the drivers meeting I will just call off all the names I have that have given me an order to make sure we have not missed someone. I am to email the orders to him before we leave Boone. Payment and such will be done there by each individual/party after the meal and YES they do take cards.

Sat., 2:00p Grandfather Mountain Tour
BRP to Grandfather Mountain (stopping there for an hour or more) with a return via NC 105. Pace will be relaxed. This is a visit to the Mountain area, but for folks who want a nice drive without the touristy stuff, you have the option to continue on the BRP to Charlie Hall and make an exit to US221 back to the north and 105, for a two-hour long loop.

THERE IS A FEE TO VISIT THE MOUNTAIN ATTRACTIONS.
Adult 13-59$20
Senior 60+$18
Child 4-12$9
Children under 4Free

Sun., 9:00a Diamondback Run
Run over to Little Switzerland and run 226A up and down a few times. Getting there via Popular Grove, Shulls Mill, 221, and the BRP.

Then take a break and gave lunch overlooking the mountains.

Afterwards folks usually begin splitting off to head home, so this run benefits the Southern / Western crowd, if you're going that way.

Start location is the mall parking lot outside Panera Bread. Come earlier to have a bite for breakfast before we head out!

There are runs not listed above. If you've never been, you'll learn a lot more about how it all works when you get to Boone.
The most important thing to remember about MiB: Bring your driving soul. Leave your ego at home.

Can't wait! Thanks for posting such a precise schedule Brad. I notice that Saturday is a little empty after the breakfast runs. I'd be happy to lead a spirited run as an addition in the afternoon if there is enough interest.

Unfortunately, we will still be running stock suspension and tires so most of the truly spirited may be out this year. We may try to tag along as the last car just to see how good it really is but with the option of dropping out if she is not capable

This is shaping up to be quite a hoot!! Thanks to Brad and those behind the scenes for volunteering their time and efforts in planning the drives.

MIB6 is going to be one of those "if you weren't there you missed it" deals. Just like the ones before it.

Yep, sorry. STL is about 4 hours west of me as well. :(

Option, not sure where you're coming from in VA, but I'm heading down on Thursday the 24th from Fairfax, down 81 to Roanoake where I'm going to pick up the Blue Ridge Parkway for the rest of the trip. If you're interested in joining up, let me know.

Heading back on Sunday I'm going by Big Walker mountain to climb the tower and drive through the 3/4 mile tunnel at 6000 RPM.

Not to answer for Option, but he moved, now lives about 30 minutes south of me, i pointed him here to see if anyone is camping. :)

Don't thank Brad. I just reposted what was on the Facebook page. That said, all those activities are quoted, so if it says something about "contact me", I'm not the "me" it refers to. In the Dyno Day, that is the only one I'm in charge of. Thanks.

Sounds great paN, there will be an extra run or two posted for Sat soon.

I am thinking about getting a whiteboard and posting it outside my room (Highland Hills street front) so everyone can post drives and/or meet ups

A couple of the activities are going to have limited entries, but most are using the "attending" feature on the Facebook event pages as a guide for preparing their drive/activities.

Okay, I'm definitely down to go but I'm not on the Facebook page. Someone hook me up? Plan is to arrive late Thursday night and stay in the hotel.

Option, not sure where you're coming from in VA....

Sorry Tim, I need to update that. I just moved to Indiana and have been missing Virginia roads ever since.

This has been posted to the MiB facebook page, thought I'd share it here for the folks unaffiliated with fb.

This will give a little more insight as to what folks are meaning when you hear these terms thrown about at MiB.

I don't see "Plaid" on there. :D

My wife and I will be there Saturday morning for the sleepyheads' drive to breakfast (which I assume is to Shatley Springs). I'm going to try to make it up Friday for the Tankful Targa. Some roads I really want to see on that one. I may have to get out and push on some occasions in order to be fast enough to keep up, though.:D

I hope everyone had a safe and fun weekend, albeit a wet one. Mother Nature must have been laughing her butt off, six straight weekends of perfect weather before the event, and then.......this.

My car is still sitting in the carport, too wet to work on it. I have a "new" MAF, but plan to re-install my OE injectors, since I have one now that sometimes leaks down.

Hate you missed it but with the rain and S/C problems it could have been only been so fun for you anyway.

It was my first time at MIB and won't be my last, had a blast, enjoyed meeting all the hardcore Miata fans and enjoying our cars on all the great roads.

Once the rain settled in on Friday in Boone (and never let up all weekend...), it was pretty much dry all weekend on the Snake, so that's where the Miata migration headed every day.
