Does the Coalition app still exist? ›

Yes, students apply Coalition via the Scoir platform. We've discontinued our use of our previous technology platform.

Yes, students may use both the Common App and the Coalition App to apply for college at the same time. However, colleges only accept one application per student.

The Coalition Application is a college application designed to make it easier to apply to multiple colleges. Instead of filling out each school's application individually, you can complete the Coalition App, and that information will be filled in for all the colleges you're applying to (that use the Coalition App).

Colleges and universities that accept both do not prefer one over the other, so it's completely up to you. Another consideration is access to financial aid. Remember that the Coalition Application specifically partners with schools that provide generous financial aid packages and/or low-cost tuition.

Both the Common App and the Coalition Application are free to use. If a college requires an application fee, then students will need to pay the application fee to the school when they submit their college applications.

We've integrated our application process within Scoir, software that many students and counselors use every day. Students can apply to participating Coalition schools directly from their Scoir account, which is free for any student to create.

The Coalition Application was created to make it easier for students from historically underrepresented backgrounds to apply to college. The Common App allows you to apply to only 20 colleges, whereas the Coalition Application has no limits.

The UC system has its own application and does not participate in the Common Application or the Coalition Application. Rather than just one personal statement, the University of California system requires four essays between 250 and 350 words in length.

However, the Common Application is generally the best choice, as this application is most widely used across the country. If you are applying to a college with multiple application choices, it is best to contact that school and find out if they have a preference.

The Coalition App allows space to include only eight distinct activities, with 64 characters allotted for each title and 255 characters allotted for each description.

What are the cons of the Common App? ›

Con: It's Easy to Overdo It

It's important to still do your research and apply to colleges that align with your needs and goals. On the other hand, don't avoid applying to colleges that don't accept the Common App just because it may be more difficult or time consuming.

Once you register, you will receive a permanent ID number, called the Coalition CBO ID or CCID. Eligible organizations are nonprofit, provide support services to students (preK-14), and/or directly advise students in their college search.

To apply for admission as a first-year or transfer student at Harvard, you will start with the Application. Fill out the Common Application or the Coalition Application, Powered by Scoir (choose one, we have no preference), followed by the supplement to help us get a better sense of who you are.

The Coalition's essay prompts allow you to share experiences or perspectives that shape who you are – because your story and your identity matters.

It's important to remember that the MIT application is separate from all other college applications. Unlike other schools, MIT does not use the Common App or Coalition App. Students must submit their application and MIT application fee through the separate MIT application portal.

More than 150 US colleges from 35 states and Washington, DC use the Coalition Application.

Stanford is one of 83 colleges and universities across the United States that formed the coalition. Shaw said the “beauty” of the coalition, which has been two years in the making, is that all of the member colleges and universities have very high graduation rates and a commitment to making college affordable.

Extracurricular activities: The Common App lets you list up to 10 extracurricular activities, while the Coalition App (powered by Scoir) only has room for eight. On the other hand, the Coalition App (powered by Scoir) gives you a higher character count to write a more detailed description of each activity on your list.
