Rescued hostages will stay in hospital - but none seriously injured

Medical staff at Sheba Hospital are helping the rescued hostages rebuild "the infrastructure of their life", according to a medic who works there.

"A lot of them have lost friends and family," Dr Itai Pessach said.

"Things happened in these eight months that they weren't here."

He said none of the four hostages have serious physical injuries but it is likely to be days before they can be discharged.

The four rescued hostages are Noa Argamani, Almog Meir Jan, Andrey Kozlov and Shlomi Ziv.

Israel has extended its controversial ban on Al Jazeera by 45 daysafter the cabinet agreedits broadcasts posed a threat to security.

Israeli authorities raided a Jerusalem hotel room used by AlJazeera as its office on 5 May and said they were shutting theoperation down for the duration of the Gaza war.

Pope Francis calls for ceasefire and aid for Gaza

During a Sunday blessing, the Pope has called for aid to reach Gaza.

"I encourage the international community to act urgently, with all means, to come to the aid of the people of Gaza, worn out by the war," he said.

"Humanitarian aid must be allowed to reach those in need, and no one can impede it."

He then backed proposals for a ceasefire, urging both Israel and Hamas to accept it "immediately for the sake of the Palestinians and Israelis".

Turkey says Israel's Nuseirat refugee camp raid was 'barbaric'

Istanbul has condemned Israel's raid on the Nuseirat refugee camp, saying it was "barbaric".

Israel carried out the raid yesterday to rescue four hostages.

The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry has said 274 Palestinians were killed during the operation.

Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari said there were fewer than 100 casualties.

It is not clear how many were militants, although eyewitnesses reported seeing the bodies of women and children.

Turkey's foreign ministry said today: "Israel has added a new one to the list of war crimes it has committed in Gaza."

White House declines to say if Biden will meet with Netanyahu next month

The US national security adviser has declined to say if Joe Biden will meet with Benjamin Netanyahu next month.

In an interview with CBS's Face the Nation, Jake Sullivan said he "didn't have anything to announce" on whether the two leaders would meet.

He added: "[Netanyahu] is coming to address the Congress. The president talks to him all the time."

We reported last month that the Israeli prime minister was invited to address Congress, despite growing criticism about Israel's strategy in Gaza.

Mr Sullivan added that he hopes a ceasefire and hostage deal will be in place by the time Mr Netanyahu comes to Washington.

For context:While Mr Biden has fully supported Israel during its war on Hamas, reports have regularly claimed the US president is angry with Mr Netanyahu about the deaths of civilians.

At the start of June, Mr Biden urged Hamas and Israel to agree to a comprehensive new ceasefire deal, saying at the time: "Everyone who wants peace now must raise their voices and work to make it real. It's time for this war to end."

While Mr Netanyahu's office confirmed he authorised negotiators to present the deal, sources close to the Israeli prime minister told Sky News they do not "wholly recognise or agree with" the proposal outlined by Mr Biden.

At least 37,084 killed since October, Gaza health ministry says

The Hamas-run health ministry has also just given an update on the number of Palestinians killed since 7 October.

At least 37,084 Palestinians have been killed and 84,494 wounded since the start of the war with Israel, it says.

The ministry adds Israeli attacks in Gaza have killed 283 people and injured 814 in the past 24 hours - which includes yesterday's Israeli raid on the Nuseirat refugee camp.

For context: While some Israeli officials have sought to cast doubt on fatality figures from Gaza, a number of independent groups say they have proved to be largely reliable and broadly in line with those later produced by the UN and Israel itself.

Examination of data from previous Gaza conflicts - when the Hamas-run health ministry's counts were compared with the post-war United Nations analysis - shows that the initial data is largely accurate with, at most, a 10-12% discrepancy.

Gaza health ministry says 274 killed in Israeli raid on refugee camp

The Hamas-run health ministry has just given an update on the number of Palestinians killed in yesterday's Israeli raid on the Nuseirat refugee camp.

It says 274 Palestinians were killed - up from 210 deaths reported earlier.

The health ministry said 698 people were injured.

Israel carried out a series of strikes yesterday in a bid to rescue hostages being held by Hamas.

Four Israeli hostages were rescued during the operation.

Israel previously said there were "under 100" Palestinian casualties during raids on the refugee camp, where it said the four freed hostages were being held in two locations.

Three killed in airstrike on refugee camp

An Israeli airstrike has reportedly hit a house in the urban Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza today.

Three people were killed in the strike, with the dead brought to the Al Aqsa Martyrs hospital in the nearby town of Deir al Balah, hospital authorities said.

An Associated Press journalist at the facility counted the bodies.

How much was the US involved in hostage rescue mission?

The operation to rescue four Israeli hostages from central Gaza was a "high risk, complex mission", according to the IDF - and it happened with help from the US, a Biden administration source says.

A US hostage cell provided advice and support throughout the process of locating and rescuing the hostages, a Biden administration official told the Associated Press. They were not authorised to comment and requested anonymity.

The hostage cells are multi-agency teams.

Pushing back against social media claims, the US Central Command said in a tweet that neither the American-built pier in Gaza that brings in aid for Palestinians by sea nor any of its equipment, personnel or other assets were used in the Israeli operation.

It said Israel used an area south of the pier "to safely return hostages".

Scenes of 'utterly helpless chaos' at Al Aqsa Martyrs Hospital

Children lying on foil blankets crowd the floor of Al Aqsa Martyrs Hospital as doctors deal with an influx of patients.

The hospital is just over two miles from where four Israeli hostages were held in the central Gaza refugee camp of Nuseirat, which was hit by multiple strikes as Israel carried out its rescue mission yesterday.

The Hamas-led government says 210 people were killed in the raids, a figure repeated by hospital spokesman Dr Khalil Al-Dakran.

Israel has acknowledged "under 100" Palestinian casualties.
