Also, I think the MAC is done with football-only invites. They cause more trouble than they're worth.

We aren't doing too much better there. We've had our head coach for 1 out of the last 3 bowl games. Though this past year we had more staff left over, I think, than we did in 2010.

You can play the what if game all day but that's why you play four quarters. Also helped that we had a seasoned QB who went on to be drafted by the Colts and currently backs up Luck so that definitely was going in our favor. This year warranted a horse whipping and every time they showed Doeren on TV during the Orange Bowl I cussed him if that helps any. I thought he did a very good job coaching (though of course he inherited a good team). I do think it's yet another dysfunctional thing about college football when your coach leaves before the season is over.

The big need for a quick move is to lock down a recruiting class

That's like a coach telling a basketball team, it's been a good run but I'm taking this other job, good luck in the Sweet 16 later this week.

The Summit would take Arkansas State basketball in a heartbeat, as would the eastward-stretching WAC (which is expanding into Chicago and Kansas City). A longshot possibility is the MVC, which is reportedly in discussions with Oral Roberts about potentially replacing Creighton. ORU finished the season at #149 in the RPI. Arkansas State was in the same neighborhood at #161. I grant your point about football-onlies complicating matters, but 13 is an awkward number for olympic sports scheduling. Adding Arkansas State as a football-only member would balance UMass and allow the MAC to have equalized east-west divisions for both football and Olympic sports.

There's something to consider ... how many Olympic Sports would be booked out? I'll use Wikipedia and the Arkie State athletics page. To summarize, its Baseball, Women's Soccer, and Women's Volleyball ~ scheduling for an odd number of BBall schools is not a major headache, nor are meet sports with individual NCAA championship qualifications, like Cross-Country and Track. Football - 14 M Cross Country - 10
