My family loves to make Christmas treats during the holidays. I'm not sure what we love more, making them or eating them!

Yes, we eat our fare share, but we also like to share the treats we make with friends and family.

Even though we made these for the Christmas season, these easy chocolate covered marshmallows are perfect for any holiday season or special occasion.

Just change out the Christmas-colored sprinkles for pink and white and you have an easy treat for birthdays, Valentine's Day, or baby showers!

I am double-dipping my marshmallows in two flavors, but you can also do just one flavor.

The chocolate flavors I used are Dark Chocolate and Peppermint, but feel free to experiment with different flavors. I think peanut butter and milk chocolate would be delicious!

Instead of sprinkles try topping them with crushed mini candy canes or peppermint candies, mini chocolate chips, coconut flakes, or white chocolate drizzle.

12 ounces was the amount of chocolate I used to dip 35 marshmallows. Since I double-dipped, I used a total of 24 ounces of chocolate.

If you are making these for people outside of your family, I strongly suggest wearing food-safe gloves. You never want to touch other people's food.

Instructions:

Begin by placing a piece of parchment paper on your cookie sheet, then set it aside.

The first layer of chocolate I am going to melt is peppermint.

Pour the chocolate pieces into a microwave-safe bowl.

Follow the package instructions on how to melt chocolate.

Here are the instructions for the candy melts I used:

  • Microwave at 50% power for 1 minute
  • Stir
  • Return to microwave for 30-second intervals stirring in between until the candy is melted

Make sure to watch the chocolate closely because it can easily burn.

The Meltables from Micheals melts beautifully. The chocolate is so silky smooth!

Place marshmallows into the bowl of melted chocolate and stir with a fork until they are completely coated.

Pick up the individual marshmallows with the fork underneath, and tap the fork on the side of the bowl to remove the excess chocolate from the mellow.

Then place the dipped marshmallow on the baking sheet.

Let the chocolate harden completely before moving to the next step. You can place them in the refrigerator for a couple minutes to speed the drying up.

Melt the dark chocolate the same as above.

Before I dipped each marshmallow, I carefully broke off any extra pooled chocolate from when I set it on the baking sheet.

Dip marshmallows into the melted dark chocolate.

I changed up the way I dipped. Sometimes I dipped the whole marshmallow, and sometimes I just dipped half. It gave them a fun variation.

While the chocolate is still wet, add your sprinkles to the top of the marshmallow.

Again, let them dry completely before packaging.

Aren't they so pretty?

This easy recipe is so much fun to make, and it is a great way to introduce small kids to baking in the kitchen! My daughter Morgan is now 21, but here she is at 7 enjoying a perfect treat she made herself!

Frequently Asked Questions:

How long will chocolate covered marshmallows last?

Chocolate covered marshmallows will stay fresh for about 7 days if stored at room temperature in an airtight container.

Can I put marshmallows in the fridge?

You can, but you don't need to. Marshmallows will keep just fine in a dry place in an airtight container.

Can any chocolate be used for dipping?

Not all chocolates melt the same. For dipping chocolate, you want to find chocolate that has a higher ratio of cocoa butter to cocoa. This helps the chocolate melt more smoothly.

I love the Meltables that are available at Michaels. They melt beautifully and taste great!

Can I make chocolate dipped marshmallows the day before?

Yes, you can! They stay fresh for up to 7 days, so you don't need to worry about making them the day before you will serve them.

Can I cut marshmallows before dipping them?

Absolutely! Especially if you are working with jumbo marshmallows. You don't want them too big because then they can be difficult to eat.

What can I do with leftover chocolate so I don't waste it?

We all understand that you can't waste chocolate.

A fun idea for extra chocolate pour is to pour it into silicone candy molds, or simply drop it onto wax paper in small bite-sized pieces. When set, you can enjoy a piece of candy whenever you want!
