Today marks the 12th anniversary of the the death of a much loved member of the Outer Banks community. Andy Samuel Griffith Andy fell in love with the banks the moment he arrived in 1947 to be a part of the Lost Colony production. He considered Roanoke Island his home until he died there in his home on July 3, 2012. I remember that day so clearly as I was at my parents’ house in NH across the sound from his home on RI. He gave back to his community in so many ways. Many of which he did quietly and received no recognition for. For example, I recently was told that in the early ‘90’s he was instrumental in getting a small 24 hr emergency medical clinic (including a helicopter pad) built in Nags Head at the west end of Barnes St. My parents lived back in there and that helicopter flew my dad up to Chesapeake when he had a bad seizure one night. It probably saved his life. At that point in time the Outer Banks hospital was yet to be built. Another time my son fell off the bed late at night and opened up a terrible gash over his eye. Thank goodness we were able to get help at the clinic. What would we have done? Probably would have ended up driving to Chesapeake. The young overnight doctor did a wonderful job of stitching up the gash(15 stitches!) My son doesn’t even have a scar! I wish I could have thanked Andy for his part in helping my family while he was alive so I’m doing it now. Thank you,Andy, from those of us who love the Banks as much as you did. |

One could often see Andy grocery shopping at the old Seamark store, riding in an electric cart. Just another shopper. |

Yep Seamark was where my mom always shopped. She said their seafood was the best. She never ran into Andy. |

You could catch him for lunch on Thursday's at Darrell's in Manteo. He was a very proper man and asked he and his guests not be interrupted while dining, |

I guess he loved Darrell’s like we do and just wanted to enjoy a peaceful quiet meal there. |

Does anyone else remember the medical facility that I mentioned. It was tucked back in across the driveway from (what used to be called) Britthaven at the end of Barnes (11 mp). |

Does anyone else remember the medical facility that I mentioned. It was tucked back in across the driveway from (what used to be called) Britthaven at the end of Barnes (11 mp). There is or was a private room at Basnight's I was told had a back door and Andy would go there often. He didn't like people saying hi to him all that much I was told. I know a maint guy that used to work at Manteo Ace and he was the only person that could make a delivery to the house. Brithaven was not a fun place to go. My dad was a doctor and he took me to a mental hospital a few times (looking for mikew I bet) and Brithaven reminded me of it in some ways. I never went to the clinic but here it is |

Hey thanks, Tim! Britthaven was there a long time. Andy liked his privacy but I’ve heard some accounts of him being friendly to folks. |

Our Manteo friends are down with us today at the shoals at Hatteras Inlet and I told him about the anniversary today. He is a HUGE Andy Griffith fan and knows everything there is to know about the shows. We always talk about "He's definitely Backbay Boston" talking about Earnest T when we see each other!!!!! We scream laughing always. Just the best shows!!!! |
