UMKC is a commuter college, with the majority of its students living off campus and driving to class every single day. Because of this, dorm life is simply awful. HORRIBLE set up for dorm registration, and your only options are two dorms, apartments on the medicine campus on troost, or apartments on rockhill. Unorganized from housing to registering for classes. Some professors have been incredible, but other professors are tenured and don't care a single bit. Housing doesn't do background checks on tenants, so random room assignments can include people actively serving a prison sentence, like I had for my first year in the dorm. Dining hall food is sub par and workers can be unsanitary sometimes. Campus is small, but pretty; but nowhere is open past 10pm on weekends or midnight on weekdays, so you will be forced to study in your room. Dorm walls are INCREDIBLY thin, RA's refuse to do their jobs, and dorm life utterly ruins this school. Admin is the main problem at this school.

My experience at UMKC was different then I had expected. I thought I was going to Excell away from my parents and not focusing on sports. Turns out, I was even more stressed without my family and it was hard when I had no teammates to talk to. I've learn that many people at UMKC are even more focused and dedicated then I am which really humbled me. I was one of the top performers at my high school and coming to a competitive school made me feel small. This still pushed me to become a better student. UMKC also brought to my attention many cultures that I haven't really seen before, it was awesome to meet and know others from different ethical backgrounds. Honestly, moving away from a small town to a big city wasn't easy and I've faced multiple challenges, but I learned many valuable lessons like surrounding myself with Christians who keep me accountable and also finding joy in the small things to get me through the hard and CRAZY times in college.
