When their sixth-generation family pork farm was crippled by drought, Deb and Daryl Hanco*ck were forced to make a decision about the future of their business. Farming wasn’t the lifestyle it used to be. Despite boasting a 150-year legacy, today’s environmental and economic pressures were such that their wholesale model was just no longer viable. The Hanco*cks began driving around the state, knocking on butcher shop doors and marketing their own pork. Then, the local butcher shop in Inglewood came up for sale, and they seized the opportunity to shift their business towards a paddock to plate model. The Hanco*cks’ story is one of resilience and renewal, and you can discover it in our newest short film, which features two other local traders who are overcoming the challenges of running a business in a small regional town. Watch ‘Welcome to Inglewood’ and read the story here: https://lnkd.in/gSCJvd2d

This local farmer's business is growing. Literally. 🌱Sky Cutler started Dirt Candy Farm in Wimberley, TX, with his family after witnessing food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic. He became passionate about small-scale farming and providing locally grown food to his neighbors. Dirt Candy Farms grows mixed vegetables and microgreens year-round and Sky posts regularly on Nextdoor to tell neighbors how they can purchase his produce."A third of our customers only have Nextdoor, so it seemed like an obvious choice to try and reach them," Sky said. "So many people come up to me and say 'we're so happy you posted on Nextdoor.'"Customers are able to find Sky's produce at a farmers market and Sky's business recently announced that their products are being sold at a local Brookshire Brothers, Inc. grocery store. "Everybody is super appreciative to be able to find locally grown food. It's a big deal to a lot of people."Sky's story is special but he's not alone.I continue to be inspired by the business owners, side hustlers, and entrepreneurs across the globe turning to Nextdoor every single day to connect with their customers, find new clients, and scale their revenue with the help of Nextdoor and our local ads platform. If you want to learn more, click the link in my comments below to see how Nextdoor can help your business, just like Sky's.#Nextdoor #NextdoorNeighborStories #SmallBusiness

Front page of the New Jersey Farmer! We didn’t expect this was going to be the fate of a photo taken on a hot, sticky August day. If I had known, I would have looked a little less bedraggled and told Matt to smile.Matt spent the day leading goat hikes, and I was at the farmers market before the reporter dropped in. We knew he was stopping by. He had asked me when might be a good time for an interview. In my mind, my answer was January. But, I obliged his suggestion for a Saturday in August. The article is a nice piece about our accidental goat dairy farm. So many visitors wonder,Did we buy this property so we could start a goat farm?Did we buy goats for the purpose of starting a dairy farm?Did we grow up on a dairy farm? No, no, and no😆Sometimes things just evolve. You see an unmet market need and you go for it. Win or lose, there is always something to learn along the way. What risks have you taken in your business? PS, the link to the article is in the comment below, if you are curious

🚀 The inspiring journey of Hiroki Koga, the co-founder of #Oishii, is a testament to the power of determination and innovation! Starting a vertical farming venture with no background in engineering, Hiroki and his team learned the ropes from scratch and built their first farm. 🧑🌾🍓Two pivotal moments marked their journey. First, when they packed their bags with Japanese strawberries and knocked on the doors of Michelin star restaurants in New York. The moment a chef tasted their strawberries and was astounded by the quality, they knew they had a product in demand. 🍓🌟Second, when they began serving their strawberries at a Michelin three-star restaurants in Manhattan. The word spread like wildfire, and they were flooded with inquiries from people ready to pay any price for their strawberries. 🍽️🔥As #Oishii grew, Hiroki found himself focusing more on people management, ensuring team happiness, and hiring people more experienced and talented than himself. 🤝🌱Hiroki's vision for Oishii is to revolutionize the agriculture industry with vertical farming technology. They chose strawberries as their first product for strategic reasons and to build a strong brand. 🌍🔄Hiroki's advice to budding entrepreneurs is to listen to advice but trust their passion and vision. He emphasizes not being overly swayed by negative comments. 💡👂#innovation #technology #people #quality #brand #entrepreneurs #team #farming

Taking a brief respite from the grueling and often cold realm of quantitative finance, I'd like to introduce you to a refreshing contrast. Meet my friend, John Nicholas. While I navigate the calculating and unforgiving world of numbers, John has carved out a niche for himself as both an inventor and an oyster farmer. His brainchild, the East Hampton Shucker, is a testament to his ingenuity, making the shucking process more efficient and enjoyable. It's a breath of fresh air to see such passion and creativity. Dive into the article to explore this delightful juxtaposition of tradition and innovation. #Innovation #OysterFarming #EastEnd

“In order to be successful, a company must have a definite moat, a competitive advantage that allows it to maintain pricing power and better than average profit margins.""I look for economic castles protected by unbreachable moats.""What we're trying to do is to find a business with a wide and long-lasting moat around it, surrounded -- protecting a terrific economic castle with an honest lord in charge of the castle.""But we are trying to figure out why is that castle still standing? And what's going to keep it standing or cause it not to be standing five, 10, 20 years from now? What are the key factors? And how permanent are they?"Yes, of course, these quotes are all from the GOAT himself, Warren Buffett. There's a lot of talk about resilience these days. To some, that means climate-resilience, or resilience amidst black swan events like COVID.I'm increasingly convinced that resilience in production agriculture is about having a path to sustained profits. In this edition of Prime Future we look at a framework to think about the levers to pull in business model innovation within agriculture. What do farm animals eat in winter? 1) Below is one answer. (hay baled in the summer)2) Cover crops (planted before summer is over)3) Eating what's left of the cash crop (sorghum, corn normally)4) GrainOur sheep are about to start eating sorghum/milo residue. The crop was grown for Canidae. We also grew a multi-species, summer cover crop. We baled the cover crop and kept the bales on the cropland it was grown on. This keeps the nutrient on the crop land itself versus buying more synthetics. But the bales still need to be unrolled in the winter. That's farming and Kim Wells shows that reality below.
